A Xylophone is the Playground
“Since the beginning of time, children have not liked to study. They would much
rather play, and if you have their interests at heart, you will let them learn while
they play; they will find that what they have mastered is child’s play.” Carl Orff
What if, sometimes, students in music class could just play with musical sounds and ideas? Play, central to Orff’s approach, has an important role within children’s formal music education. The opportunity to play freely in music has many benefits, involving imagination, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, autonomy and trust. But, what does it look like, sound like and feel like? In this workshop, the activities, conversations and questions will orbit around free play, music education, and, even, musical identity.
For thirty years, Tisia Minichiello has been teaching K-7 music and choir in Burnaby. An Orff trained music specialist, Tisia integrates play into many aspects of her music teaching. Her recent Masters’ project focused on free play in the intermediate music classroom. Over the years, Tisia has presented Orff workshops throughout B.C. She is co-director of the Northern Spirit Ringers, one of three District Hand Bell Choirs in Burnaby.
